On 15 May, as every third Thursday in May, the Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) is celebrated.

It is a day dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of digital accessibility and inclusive design for all people, regardless of their abilities or limitations. The aim is to raise awareness of the challenges faced by millions of people when browsing websites, using apps or accessing digital services that are not designed with their needs in mind. Digital accessibility is not just a technical or design issue, but a fundamental right that ensures fairness, inclusion and full participation in the digital society.

Making our digital services accessible means creating online environments that can be understood, navigated and used by all people, regardless of their visual, hearing, motor or cognitive abilities. Accessibility benefits us all: it improves the user experience, increases the reach of services and demonstrates a real commitment to diversity and inclusion. In an increasingly digital world, moving towards accessible environments is a shared responsibility.

New project together with the University School of Physiotherapy of the ONCE

At Geoslab, we are firmly committed to accessibility and the development of inclusive digital solutions. For this reason, we are especially proud to announce that we are working on a new project together with the ONCE University School of Physiotherapy, a university centre that trains visually impaired physiotherapists.

Through this project, by redesigning HEFORA, we will provide the school with a platform and tools for the efficient management of their patients, clinical sessions, as well as the monitoring of the entire telerehabilitation process for professionals and patients. All of this is perfectly adapted to guarantee accessibility regardless of the user’s abilities or limitations. We believe that this is an innovative initiative and a benchmark in terms of accessibility, which demonstrates how technology can contribute to a fairer and more equitable society.

The European Accessibility Act (EAA) enters into force on 28 June next.

DIRECTIVE (EU) 2019/882, also known as the European Accessibility Act (EAA), on accessibility requirements for products and services of 17 April 2019 will be mandatory for EU member states from 28 June 2025.

The aim of this Directive is to improve the functioning of the internal market for accessible products and services by removing barriers created by diverging standards in the Member States.

Businesses will benefit from:

  • Common standards on accessibility in the EU, thus reducing costs
  • Easier cross-border trade
  • More market opportunities for their accessible products and services

People with disabilities and older people will benefit from:

  • More accessible products and services on the market
  • Accessible products and services at more competitive prices
  • Fewer barriers to access to transport, education and the labour market

The main changes brought about by the implementation of this regulation are:

  • European harmonisation: Overcomes national fragmentation and facilitates the free movement of accessible products/services.
  • Broadens the scope: Unlike Directive 2016/2102 (aimed at public bodies), this includes the private sector and more types of services and products.
  • Common requirements: Establishes uniform technical criteria for the whole EU.

We will soon expand the analysis of the EAA by detailing the essential dates, the areas of application, possible exemptions and their penalties.
